I have a ES-8/100 connected via RS422, but haven't got it working yet.

Yes, we have controlled a JL Cooper ES8/100 in the past from Nware. I used a serial-to-network server to do it instead of going directly via RS422. Is it simply not communicating or do you have an intermittent response or erroneous control?
